Five things to sort before you land in Accra
From your SIM card to your Ghana Card appointment — the pre-arrival checklist that will save you weeks of stress.
Before you fly
Relocating to Ghana is exciting. But the first two weeks after arrival can feel overwhelming if you haven't prepared. Here are the five things our consultants recommend sorting before your flight lands at Kotoka.
1. Sort your SIM card at the airport
MTN and Telecel have desks in the arrivals hall. Buy a SIM immediately — you'll need data to use Uber, Google Maps, and WhatsApp before you have a local number forwarded. Bring your passport.
2. Know your temporary housing situation
Even if your permanent apartment isn't ready, confirm exactly where you're sleeping on night one. We arrange serviced apartments for all our clients — but even if you're going it alone, book somewhere with 24-hour security and backup generator.
3. Book your Ghana Card appointment early
The Ghana Card (national ID) is required for bank accounts, SIM registration, and more. Appointments at the NIA fill up fast. Book online at niaghana.org before you arrive.
4. Carry USD cash
The Cedi fluctuates. Many landlords quote rents in USD. Having $500–$1,000 in small bills gives you flexibility in the first week while your local account gets set up.
5. Brief your family on emergency numbers
Police: 191. Ambulance: 193. Fire: 192. Save these in your phone before you board.
